The Message That Changed Everything About My Brother

PART 2 — The Message That Changed Everything About My Brother

For the first time since the baby was born, Ethan didn’t look at Vanessa.

He stared at his daughter’s tiny hand wrapped around his finger.

Then his phone began vibrating.

Once.

Twice.

Again.

He pulled it from his pocket.

I saw his expression change immediately.

Vanessa noticed too.

“Who is it?”

Ethan locked the screen.

“No one.”

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“Then why did you look scared?”

He didn’t answer.

The phone vibrated again.

This time, Vanessa reached for it.

Ethan pulled it away.

That was when I knew the job loss wasn’t the only secret he had been hiding.

“Ethan,” I said quietly. “Show her.”

He looked at me.

Then at Vanessa.

Finally, he unlocked the phone.

There were eleven messages from the same number.

The first one said:

“You promised you would tell her tonight.”

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“Tell me what?”

Ethan closed his eyes.

“I made a deal with someone.”

“What kind of deal?”

He swallowed hard.

“Before the baby was born, I borrowed money.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“How much?”

Ethan whispered the amount.

Vanessa’s hand flew to her mouth.

It wasn’t a few thousand dollars.

It was nearly everything they had left.

But then came the part that made my blood run cold.

The person who had loaned Ethan the money wasn’t a bank.

It was a man from his old company.

A man Ethan had worked for before losing his job.

And according to the messages, Ethan had promised to repay him within thirty days.

When he couldn’t, the man threatened to expose everything.

Including the fact that Ethan had been lying to Vanessa.

But there was another message.

One sentence.

“If you want to keep your house, bring me the documents tomorrow.”

Vanessa looked at Ethan.

“What documents?”

He didn’t answer.

I did.

“The house papers?”

Ethan nodded.

Vanessa slowly sat down.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then the baby made a tiny sound.

Vanessa immediately looked down.

Her expression softened.

She kissed her daughter’s forehead.

And then she said something I will never forget.

“You were so afraid of losing this house that you were willing to lose your family.”

Ethan started crying.

“I thought I could fix everything before you found out.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“You had four months.”

“I know.”

“You had four months to tell me.”

“I know.”

“And instead, you waited until the moment our daughter was born.”

Ethan covered his face.

Then Vanessa looked at me.

“Can you take the baby for a minute?”

I nodded.

She placed the little girl carefully into my arms.

Then she turned toward Ethan.

“I don’t know if I can forgive you.”

Ethan looked broken.

“But I do know one thing,” Vanessa continued.

“Our daughter will never grow up believing she was the reason her father was afraid.”

Ethan stood.

He walked toward his daughter.

This time, there was no hesitation.

He gently touched her cheek.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

Then his phone vibrated one more time.

Ethan looked at the screen.

His face went completely white.

I leaned closer.

The new message contained only six words:

“I know where your daughter is.”

And suddenly, the financial problems weren’t the biggest danger anymore.
