PART 2 — The Woman My Husband Never Told Me About
For several seconds, I couldn’t breathe.
The name Adrian had just spoken wasn’t just a name from his past.
It was Victoria.
The woman he had once told me was “completely out of his life.”
I remembered that conversation.
Six years ago, shortly before our sixth anniversary, I had asked Adrian about an old photograph I’d accidentally found in a box in our closet.
It showed him standing beside a beautiful woman outside a small airport.
He had taken the picture from my hands and quietly said, “Her name is Victoria. It’s over. It’s been over for years.”
I believed him.
I had never asked another question.
But now, sitting on his plane six years later, I heard that same name coming through the cockpit speakers.
“Victoria Hayes,” Adrian said, his voice suddenly softer than before. “Would you please stand for a moment?”
My stomach dropped.
A woman in seat 3A slowly stood.
She was older than I remembered from the photograph.
Her hair was streaked with silver.
And when she turned around, I recognized her immediately.
Victoria.
She looked toward the cockpit with tears already filling her eyes.
Then Adrian said something that made the entire cabin go silent.
“Victoria was the person who taught me how to fly.”
I stared at the back of her seat.
My heart was pounding.
But Adrian continued.
“She was my instructor when I was twenty-four. She believed in me when nobody else did.”
People around me smiled.
Someone even whispered, “That’s beautiful.”
But I couldn’t smile.
Because Adrian had never told me that Victoria had been his flight instructor.
He had only told me she was someone from his past.
Then he said something that changed everything.
“Six years ago, Victoria was diagnosed with an aggressive illness. She asked me for one favor.”
Victoria covered her mouth.
Adrian’s voice cracked.
“She asked me to promise that if she ever got the chance to fly again, I would be the one sitting in the cockpit.”
I felt my anger begin to disappear.
And then Adrian said:
“She thought tonight would be her last flight.”
Victoria began crying.
So did several passengers.
I sat frozen in 14C, suddenly ashamed of the story I had created inside my own head.
Then Adrian continued.
“But there’s one more person I need to thank tonight.”
My heart stopped.
Because this time…
he said my name.
“Claire Bennett.”
Every head on the plane turned toward me.
I slowly stood.
Adrian’s voice came through the speakers.
“My wife.”
Then he said something I will never forget.
“Claire, I know you thought you were surprising me tonight.”
The cabin erupted in laughter.
I covered my face.
He had known.
Somehow, my husband had known the entire time.
But then his voice became serious.
“And there’s something I’ve been trying to tell you for three months.”
I looked toward the cockpit.
“What?” I whispered.
Adrian took a breath.
“I’m not flying this route again after tonight.”
The cabin became completely silent.
And I suddenly realized…
this anniversary surprise was about to become the biggest decision of our marriage.
