PART 2 — The Truth About Richard Was Hidden in Those Photographs
Richard stared at me for several seconds.
Then he looked at the photographs scattered across the bed.
“You have to trust me,” he whispered.
I almost laughed.
“Trust you?”
I pointed at the pictures.
“You secretly photographed me before we even met.”
His jaw tightened.
“I know how this looks.”
“No,” I said. “You don’t.”
The alarm continued screaming somewhere above us.
Red emergency lights began flashing beneath the cabin door.
Richard stepped closer.
“I was watching you because someone else was watching you first.”
My stomach dropped.
“What?”
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small envelope.
Inside were printed photographs.
Not of me this time.
They were pictures of a man standing near the ship’s entrance, watching me board.
Another showed him following me toward the dining room.
Another had been taken outside my cabin.
I looked at Richard.
“Who is he?”
Richard’s voice became very quiet.
“Your late husband’s name was Thomas, right?”
Every hair on my arms stood up.
“How do you know my husband’s name?”
Richard took a breath.
“Because Thomas and I worked together thirty years ago.”
I couldn’t speak.
He explained that my husband had discovered something at the company where they worked—financial fraud involving millions of dollars.
Thomas had planned to expose it.
But before he could, the investigation suddenly disappeared.
So did several documents.
Richard had spent years believing Thomas’s death had been completely unrelated.
Until three months ago.
That was when he received an anonymous message containing one sentence:
“The evidence is still with his wife.”
I felt dizzy.
“I don’t have any evidence.”
Richard shook his head.
“You might.”
He pointed toward my suitcase.
“That suitcase wasn’t moved because someone wanted to steal your clothes.”
My heart began pounding.
“Then what were they looking for?”
Richard opened the suitcase.
Everything inside appeared untouched.
Except for one thing.
An old photograph of Thomas and me from our tenth anniversary was missing from its frame.
Richard reached underneath the suitcase lining and pulled out a tiny black memory card.
I stared at it.
“I’ve never seen that before.”
“I know.”
“Then how did it get there?”
Richard looked toward the hallway.
“Someone put it there before we boarded.”
Suddenly, footsteps echoed outside the cabin.
Richard grabbed my hand.
“Now you understand why I couldn’t tell you everything at dinner.”
The footsteps stopped directly outside our door.
A man’s shadow appeared beneath it.
Richard whispered:
“That’s him.”
I felt my entire body go cold.
The handle slowly began to turn.
Then someone knocked.
Three times.
Richard moved in front of me.
“Stay behind me.”
The door opened.
A man in a dark uniform stepped inside.
He looked at Richard.
Then at me.
Then his eyes landed on the memory card.
His expression changed.
“You found it.”
Richard immediately grabbed my wrist.
“Run.”
We rushed into the corridor as another alarm began blaring.
But as we reached the stairwell, Richard suddenly stopped.
He looked at me with tears in his eyes.
“There’s something else you need to know about your husband.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
Richard swallowed.
“Thomas didn’t die four years ago because of his heart.”
My knees nearly gave out.
Richard caught my arm.
“He was killed.”
And then he whispered the part that shattered everything I thought I knew about my marriage:
“Your husband knew someone would eventually come looking for you.”
