The bell over the door rang again, but I barely noticed. My father, Arthur Cole, sat quietly in the chair, his wrinkled hands resting peacefully on the striped cape.
For the past six months, he had shown up every single Saturday morning at 8:00 AM sharp, asking for a trim. I used to tease him, telling him there was barely anything left to cut, but I had been too busy rushing between clients to see what was really happening.
Since my mother passed away last winter, his big farmhouse outside of town had grown completely silent. This noisy, crowded barbershop was the only place left where he didn’t feel invisible.
“I’m sorry, Dad,” I whispered, setting the clippers down on the counter and wrapping a warm, steamed towel around his shoulders. “I’ve been so focused on keeping this shop running that I wasn’t really paying attention.”
He reached out from under the cape and patted my arm, his eyes reflecting the soft morning light. “You’re a good boy, Preston. Your mother and I always knew you’d make this place a home for people. I just wanted to be a part of it while I still could.”
That was the moment I made a decision. I looked at the second empty chair in the shop—the one I usually used for walk-ins when the weekend rush got too heavy.
“Starting next week, Dad, you’re not paying for a haircut ever again,” I said, wiping a stray tear from my cheek before turning to face the waiting customers. “In fact, you’re on the payroll. I need someone to manage the coffee pot, talk sports with the regulars, and keep me company on Saturdays.”
A couple of the old-timers waiting on the vinyl chairs nodded in approval, and Mr. Henderson from down the road shouted, “About time you got some real management in here, Preston!”
My father’s smile widened, a genuine spark returning to his face for the first time in months. The corporate chains and modern salons could keep their fancy apps and expensive prices—in our little town, the best thing a barbershop could ever cut was the loneliness.
