MY HUSBAND FORGOT HIS APPLE WATCH ON THE CHARGER, AND A MESSAGE LIT UP THE SCREEN SAYING, “LAST NIGHT WAS PERFECT.” I NEVER TOLD HIM WHAT I’D SEEN, BUT THAT MORNING, I QUIETLY FOLLOWED HIM WHEN HE LEFT THE HOUSE (Part 2)

I kept three cars back, my hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly my knuckles turned white.
Cameron turned left onto Elm Street, heading in the exact opposite direction of his corporate office downtown. My stomach plummeted. The web of lies he had spun over breakfast was already unravelling, block by block.
He finally pulled into the parking lot of the elegant Oakridge Retirement Community—the high-end assisted living facility where his wealthy, ailing father had been staying for the past year.
I parked a short distance away, watching in utter confusion as Cameron hurried inside carrying a small bakery box.
Silently, I slipped through the glass doors behind him and followed the quiet hallway to his father’s room. The door was slightly ajar. I braced myself for the absolute worst, my breath catching in my throat as I peeked inside.
There was no mysterious woman.
There was only Cameron, sitting on the edge of the bed, gently holding his father’s frail hand. Sitting on the nightstand was a shared laptop, showing a fully completed, intricate family tree digital archive.
“Look at this, Dad,” Cameron whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “We finally finished it. Every single old photo, every date from the family archives in Scotland. It’s all saved.”
His father smiled, a tear slipping down his weathered cheek. “Last night was perfect, son. Thank you for staying up with me to get it done before… before my memory fades any further.”
Suddenly, the pieces violently clicked into place. The message hadn’t come from a secret lover. It had come from his father’s tablet, which was synced to Cameron’s personal account. Cameron hadn’t been working late at the office; he had been spending precious, final late-night hours preserving his father’s legacy, keeping it a secret only because he wanted to surprise our entire family for our upcoming tenth anniversary.
The guilt of my suspicion washed over me like a wave. I quietly pushed the door open, wiping my own tears away. Cameron looked up, startled, but as I walked over and wrapped my arms around his shoulders, his tension melted away. The trust we had built over nine years wasn’t broken—it was deeper than I had ever realized.
