PART 2 — I Looked at My Newborn Niece’s Back and Finally Understood Why My Brother Refused to Take Her
I looked down at the baby.
At first, I didn’t understand what Ryan was seeing.
She was tiny.
Perfect.
Her little fingers were curled into a fist, and she was sleeping peacefully against my chest.
Then I gently turned her over.
And my heart stopped.
There, just below her left shoulder, was a small birthmark.
Not an ordinary mark.
It was shaped almost exactly like a crescent moon.
Melissa covered her mouth.
Ryan stepped backward.
“No,” he whispered.
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?”
He didn’t answer.
Melissa was crying now.
“Ryan… tell her.”
He shook his head.
“I can’t.”
“Tell me!”
Ryan finally looked at me.
“That mark belonged to our mother.”
I froze.
Our parents had died when we were teenagers.
I remembered our mother’s birthmark.
A crescent-shaped mark in exactly the same place.
But that wasn’t what terrified Ryan.
He reached into his jacket and pulled out an old photograph.
It was a picture of our mother holding me as a baby.
He turned it over.
Written on the back were several words in her handwriting.
“If either of my children ever has a daughter, look for the mark.”
My stomach dropped.
“What does that mean?”
Ryan sat down.
Melissa stared at the photograph.
“I thought you knew,” she whispered.
“Knew what?”
Ryan finally told me something he’d discovered months earlier.
After our parents died, he’d gone through their old documents.
Inside a locked box, he found medical records.
Our mother had apparently been part of a confidential adoption investigation before she died.
And the records suggested something impossible.
One of the babies she had given birth to wasn’t actually hers.
Ryan believed our mother had secretly adopted a baby girl years before we were born.
But nobody knew where that child had gone.
Until now.
He looked at the newborn in my arms.
“The mark means she could be connected to our family.”
I stared at him.
“But she’s your biological daughter.”
Ryan nodded.
“That’s what makes this terrifying.”
He explained that before the embryo transfer, the fertility clinic had used an anonymous donor.
Ryan and Melissa had been told the genetic material was completely verified.
But something had gone wrong.
The clinic had recently contacted Ryan privately.
They discovered an error in their records.
The embryo they believed belonged to Melissa and Ryan had been switched with another embryo.
My baby wasn’t genetically theirs.
She was genetically connected to someone from our mother’s past.
Ryan had refused to take her because he was terrified.
Not because he didn’t love her.
Because he thought taking her home would mean hiding a medical and legal nightmare.
Melissa looked at him through tears.
“You should have told us.”
“I was afraid.”
Then she looked at me.
“What are we supposed to do with her?”
I looked down at the baby.
She was still sleeping.
Completely unaware that three adults were standing around her, trying to decide what her future would be.
Then a nurse entered the room.
She looked at Ryan.
“Mr. Carter, the clinic called again.”
Ryan stood.
“What did they say?”
The nurse hesitated.
“They found the original genetic records.”
Ryan’s face went pale.
“Where?”
The nurse handed him a sealed envelope.
He opened it.
His hands began trembling.
Then he looked at me.
“This isn’t a clinic mistake.”
I felt cold all over.
“What do you mean?”
He handed me the report.
At the bottom was a genetic match.
The baby’s DNA matched someone in our family.
Someone who was supposed to have been dead for more than twenty years.
Our mother.
I couldn’t breathe.
“That’s impossible.”
Ryan shook his head.
“That’s what I said.”
Melissa stared at the report.
“But if that’s true…”
She couldn’t finish.
The baby started crying.
I held her closer.
And suddenly, another thought hit me.
If the baby’s DNA matched our mother…
then there was only one way that could be possible.
Someone had preserved her genetic material.
Someone had used it.
Someone had deliberately created a child connected to our family.
Ryan looked at me.
“There’s more.”
He pulled out another document.
A name was circled in red.
It belonged to the doctor who had treated our mother before she died.
The same doctor who had signed the paperwork after her death.
And according to the records, that doctor had been working with the fertility clinic for years.
Melissa whispered,
“Why would anyone do this?”
Ryan didn’t answer.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
The caller ID was blocked.
He answered.
A man’s voice spoke for only a few seconds.
Ryan’s expression changed completely.
He hung up.
“What did he say?” I asked.
Ryan looked at the baby.
Then at me.
“He said our mother left something for her.”
“What?”
“A trust.”
I stared at him.
“For the baby?”
He nodded.
“And he said it contains millions of dollars.”
My knees nearly buckled again.
But the money wasn’t the frightening part.
The caller had given Ryan one final warning.
“Do not take that child home until you learn who her real mother was.”
I looked down at the newborn in my arms.
And for the first time, I wondered if the baby wasn’t simply the child we had been waiting for.
Maybe she was the key to a secret our mother had taken to her grave.
And someone had just gone to extraordinary lengths to make sure we never discovered it.
