My Mother’s Letter Revealed Why She Abandoned Three Babies, and I Wasn’t Ready for the Truth

PART 2 — My Mother’s Letter Revealed Why She Abandoned Three Babies, and I Wasn’t Ready for the Truth

My hands were shaking before I even unfolded the letter.

For twenty years, I had carried one question inside me.

Why?

Why would a mother walk away from three three-month-old babies without looking back?

Why would she leave her oldest child to become their parent?

I thought the answer was simple.

She didn’t want us.

But the first line of that letter made me question everything.

“I did not leave because I stopped loving you.”

I stopped reading.

Piper was crying beside me.

Nora stared at the floor.

Wren whispered,

“Keep going.”

I unfolded the letter again.

“I left because someone told me that if I stayed, all four of my children would be taken from me.”

My heart dropped.

I looked at my sisters.

“Who?”

They didn’t know.

The letter explained that months before Mom left, she had discovered a secret involving our father.

A secret she had been terrified to reveal.

Our father hadn’t simply disappeared from our lives.

He had been threatening her.

He wanted custody.

And he had powerful friends who could make that happen.

Mom believed that if she fought him openly, we would be separated.

So she made the decision she thought would protect us.

She left.

But she never intended for me to raise the babies alone.

According to the letter, she believed a relative would take them.

She had arranged for someone to come.

That person never showed up.

And by the time Mom realized no one was coming, she was already too afraid to return.

I couldn’t understand.

“If she loved us, why didn’t she come back?”

Wren finally answered.

“Because she thought coming back would put us in danger.”

I continued reading.

Then I reached a paragraph that made my entire body go cold.

“I watched you from a distance.”

Mom knew where we lived.

She knew when Nora graduated high school.

She knew Piper got married.

She knew Wren had surgery.

She knew everything.

She just never contacted us.

Why?

Because someone had been watching her too.

Then came the name.

The name of the person who had threatened her twenty years ago.

I recognized it immediately.

It was the name of a man who had been a close family friend.

A man who had attended our childhood birthdays.

A man I had trusted.

I looked at my sisters.

“Did you know this?”

Piper shook her head.

“We only read the first page.”

“Then why didn’t you give me the letter?”

Wren started crying.

“Because there was another envelope.”

She reached into her bag.

My mother’s handwriting was on that one too.

“This arrived with the first letter.”

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

It showed Mom standing beside a man I had never seen before.

On the back was a date.

Three days before she abandoned us.

Underneath it, she had written:

“This is the man who tried to save us.”

I stared at the photograph.

“Who is he?”

Nora whispered,

“We don’t know.”

Then I noticed something in the background.

A hospital.

And beside the man’s hand was a small leather folder.

The same kind of folder Mom had always kept important documents inside.

I turned the photograph over again.

There was one more sentence.

“If my children ever find this, tell them their brother saved them before he even knew what was happening.”

My eyes filled with tears.

I had always thought I sacrificed my future for my sisters.

Chicago.

My career.

My twenties.

My freedom.

But according to Mom, there had been something else happening that day.

Something I never saw.

She had left because she believed someone was coming for us.

And somehow, without knowing it, I had become the reason that person failed.

Then I heard a knock at the front door.

All four of us froze.

It was nearly midnight.

I stood slowly.

“Were you expecting someone?”

Nora shook her head.

I walked toward the door.

Another knock.

Then a man’s voice came through the wood.

“I’m sorry it took twenty years.”

My heart stopped.

I knew that voice.

It belonged to the man in the photograph.

I opened the door.

An older man stood on the porch holding the same leather folder from the picture.

His eyes moved past me toward my three sisters.

Then he started crying.

“You don’t remember me,” he whispered.

I couldn’t speak.

He looked at me.

“But your mother made me promise something.”

“What?”

He held out the folder.

“To tell you why she really left.”

I took it.

Inside was a birth certificate.

Then a court document.

Then a photograph of my father.

And finally, a letter addressed only to me.

The first sentence made my blood run cold.

“Your mother didn’t abandon you that afternoon.”

I looked up.

The man was crying.

“She was running from someone.”

“Who?”

He glanced over his shoulder.

Then lowered his voice.

“Your father.”

I felt the room spin.

Because my father had supposedly died eighteen years ago.

And according to the document in my hands…

he hadn’t.

He had been alive the entire time.

And he had been looking for us.
