PART 2 — My Father-in-Law Opened the Envelope, and My Husband Finally Learned the Truth About His Mother
Richard held the envelope tightly.
Lena lunged across the table, trying to snatch it from his hands.
“Richard, don’t you dare!”
He stood up.
For the first time since I’d met him, I saw something in his face that looked like anger.
“Sit down, Lena.”
She froze.
Ethan stared at his father.
“Dad, what is going on?”
Richard looked at his son.
“You deserve to know what your mother has been doing behind your back.”
Lena shook her head violently.
“Don’t listen to him. He’s trying to destroy our family.”
Richard opened the envelope.
Inside were printed emails, hotel receipts, bank statements, and several photographs.
He placed the first photograph on the table.
Ethan picked it up.
His face immediately changed.
It showed Lena meeting with a divorce attorney.
Ethan stared at it.
“When was this?”
“Three months ago,” Richard replied.
I felt my stomach drop.
Richard continued.
“Your mother wasn’t here to protect your marriage.”
“She was here because she wanted to control what happened to it.”
Ethan looked at Lena.
“Why were you meeting a divorce lawyer?”
Lena’s lips trembled.
“That isn’t what you think.”
Richard placed another document on the table.
It was a financial agreement.
Lena had been secretly encouraging Ethan to separate from me so she could convince him to move back home and invest in a business she controlled.
Then Richard revealed the part that made Ethan stand up.
“Your mother also opened a credit account in your name.”
Ethan’s face went pale.
“What?”
Richard slid the statement toward him.
Thousands of dollars had been charged to it.
Luxury purchases.
Hotel rooms.
Jewelry.
And one payment to a private investigator.
I looked at Ethan.
“What was the investigator hired to find?”
Richard answered before Lena could.
“Information about your wife.”
Ethan slowly turned toward his mother.
“You investigated her?”
Lena finally broke.
“I was trying to protect you!”
“From what?”
“From making the biggest mistake of your life!”
Ethan shook his head.
“No, Mom.”
His voice was quiet now.
“You were trying to make sure I never became a husband.”
The room went silent.
Then Richard pulled out one final document.
“This is the reason I followed you here.”
Ethan looked at it.
It was a copy of an old letter written by Lena years earlier.
She had written that Ethan would never be truly independent and that she would always make his major decisions for him.
Richard looked at his son.
“I should have stopped this years ago.”
Ethan sat down slowly.
Then he looked at me.
“I am so sorry.”
I didn’t answer immediately.
He reached for my hand.
“I told myself you were overreacting. I told myself Mom was just being involved.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“But I was wrong.”
Lena stood suddenly.
“If you choose her over me, Ethan, don’t ever call me your mother again!”
Ethan closed his eyes.
Then he said something I never expected.
“Maybe that’s exactly what I need.”
Lena stared at him.
Richard gently took her arm.
“Come on.”
She fought him all the way to the door.
When they finally left, the room became completely silent.
Ethan looked at me.
“I don’t expect you to forgive me tonight.”
I looked down at our wedding ring.
“You told your mother things that belonged only between us.”
“I know.”
“You let her humiliate me for six days.”
“I know.”
“And when I finally stood up for myself, you told me to sit down.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“I know.”
For a long moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Ethan took off his wedding ring.
He placed it on the table.
“I don’t want you to wear this because you feel trapped.”
He pushed it toward me.
“If you give me another chance, I want to earn it.”
I stared at him.
Then I realized something.
The honeymoon hadn’t ended the way I imagined.
But perhaps our marriage was finally beginning.
Because for the first time since I met Ethan, he wasn’t listening to his mother.
He was listening to me.
And before we left the resort the next morning, Richard quietly pulled me aside.
“There is one more thing you need to know.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
He glanced toward the hallway.
“Lena wasn’t the person who started this.”
My heart stopped.
“Then who was?”
Richard handed me a second envelope.
And the name written across it made my blood run cold.
