She thought because I was an older widow, she could walk right over me. Her final comment the night before had been: “You have more than enough pension money anyway, Eleanor. Don’t be a petty old woman over a few dollars of juice.”
That condescending smirk was her biggest mistake.
The item I had retrieved from her yard that morning wasn’t just my concrete bird—it was my late husband’s heavy, heavy-duty industrial logging chain. I had padlocked it tightly through the rim of her front tire, anchoring it directly to the steel beam of my garage foundation.
On the live camera feed, I watched her try to shove her charging cable into my outdoor outlet. But she couldn’t. Earlier that afternoon, an electrician had helped me install a heavy-duty, locking steel cover over the socket.
Realizing she had been blocked, she let out an angry curse. She kicked the steel box, dropped her charging cable, and stormed back to her electric SUV. She slammed the door, turned the engine on, and aggressively threw the vehicle into reverse, determined to back away from my property line.
She never checked her tires.
The moment she hit the accelerator, the massive logging chain went violently taut.
A sickening, metallic crunch echoed through the midnight air. The immense torque of the electric engine combined with the unyielding steel chain completely ripped the entire front axle and suspension assembly clean off the chassis of her $70,000 vehicle. Sparks flew across the grass as the front corner of her SUV collapsed heavily onto the dirt with a loud, crushing thud.
I didn’t stay behind the curtains this time. I walked right out onto the porch, turning on the floodlights, with my phone already connected to the local sheriff’s department.
My neighbor burst out of her ruined car, screaming at the top of her lungs, her face twisted in absolute fury. “You crazy old hag! Look what you did to my car! You’re going to pay for this! I’m calling the police!”
“The police are already on their way, Brenda,” I called back, my voice completely calm and steady. “And they’re coming to review the footage from my new security camera.”
Ten minutes later, two deputy sheriffs arrived. Brenda immediately began hysterically fabricating a story about how I had maliciously booby-trapped her vehicle.
I simply handed the deputies my tablet. They watched the clear, high-definition footage of Brenda trespassing on my property, attempting to steal electricity for the second consecutive night, and ignoring the clearly posted ‘No Trespassing’ signs I had put up that afternoon.
The senior deputy shook his head, looking from the tablet to Brenda’s completely ruined vehicle. “Ma’am, you were caught red-handed committing utility theft, criminal trespassing, and you destroyed your own vehicle while trying to flee the scene of a crime.”
Brenda was placed in handcuffs right there on the gravel drive, her previous arrogance completely vanishing into desperate tears as she was led away to the patrol car. Her insurance company later refused to pay a single cent for the vehicle damage because it occurred during the commission of a felony.
The next morning, I moved my concrete bird back to its rightful spot in my flower bed. Brenda learned a very expensive, permanent lesson: never mistake a quiet widow’s patience for weakness.
