MY PILOT HUSBAND HAD A FLIGHT ON OUR ANNIVERSARY, SO I BOUGHT A SEAT ON HIS PLANE TO SURPRISE HIM — BUT THEN HIS ANNOUNCEMENT MADE MY BLOOD RUN COLD (Part 2)

“Please join me in wishing a very happy birthday to the love of my life, sitting right down in First Class—Vanessa,” Terrence’s voice boomed over the speakers, filled with a warmth he hadn’t shown me in years.
The entire cabin burst into applause. Several flight attendants moved down the aisle carrying a bottle of champagne and a bouquet of red roses, heading straight toward the front of the plane.
I sank back into seat 14C, my heart hammering against my ribs so violently I could barely breathe. The red dress I had worn to surprise him suddenly felt like a cruel joke.
Vanessa.
She wasn’t a passenger he had just noticed on the manifest. He had planned this. He had coordinated with the crew. He was celebrating another woman on the exact night of our twelfth wedding anniversary, completely unaware that his wife was listening from the back of the coach cabin.
I sat in absolute, numbing silence for the entire ninety-minute flight. While the other passengers slept or watched movies, I quietly downloaded my bank apps, transferring half of our shared savings into a private account. I screenshotted our wedding photos on my phone, preparing the ultimate landing for Captain Terrence.
When the plane finally touched down and the seatbelt sign turned off, I didn’t rush off. I waited until the cabin cleared out entirely.
As I walked toward the exit, I saw Terrence standing near the cockpit door, his arm wrapped tightly around a beautiful, younger blonde woman holding the red roses. He was laughing, looking happier than I had seen him in a decade.
Then, his eyes met mine.
The laugh died in his throat. His face drained of all color, turning a sickly, ash-grey as he stared at my red dress. “Rachel?” he whispered, his voice trembling so hard the flight attendant next to him turned around.
“Happy anniversary, Terrence,” I said loudly, my voice echoing through the empty cabin so clearly that Vanessa stiffened. “Don’t worry about coming home tonight. I’ve already called your airline’s HR department from my seat, and your keys are waiting with my divorce lawyer at the terminal.”
I didn’t wait for him to stammer an excuse. I turned my back, walking down the jet bridge with my head held high, leaving him to explain the wreckage of his career and his marriage to the woman in first class.
