PART 2 — Owen’s Letter Revealed the Truth
Because what my thirteen-year-old little boy had quietly written in those pages was something I never could have prepared myself to read.
I wiped my tears and forced myself to continue.
“Mom, please don’t be angry with me for writing this.”
My hands immediately began shaking harder.
“I didn’t know who else I could tell.”
The next sentence made my stomach twist.
“Dad has been lying to you.”
I looked up at Mrs. Dilmore.
She was crying too.
“What does this mean?” I whispered.
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
I looked back at the letter.
Owen had written that for almost a year, he had been hearing his father arguing with someone late at night.
At first, he thought it was work.
Then he realized his father was receiving strange phone calls.
Owen said his father would leave the house, sometimes for hours, and return angry.
But there was one thing that frightened Owen most.
His father kept a second phone.
A phone he never allowed anyone to touch.
Then Owen wrote:
“Mom, I found it.”
My heart stopped.
He had discovered the phone hidden inside an old toolbox in the garage.
Owen had seen messages on the screen.
He didn’t understand everything they meant.
But one message stood out.
“The lake will take care of everything.”
I nearly dropped the letter.
“The lake?”
Mrs. Dilmore covered her mouth.
I kept reading.
Owen wrote that three days before the fishing trip, he had overheard Dad arguing with a man named Carl.
Carl was one of my husband’s closest friends.
The same man who had supposedly been with them at the lake when Owen disappeared.
Owen wrote:
“Dad told him he couldn’t do it anymore.”
Then:
“Carl said if Dad changed his mind, Mom would find out everything.”
My breathing became shallow.
Everything.
What did that mean?
I continued reading.
“Mom, I think Dad is scared of Carl.”
Then came the sentence that shattered me.
“Dad told Carl that he wasn’t going to hurt me.”
I froze.
My eyes moved over the words again.
He wasn’t going to hurt me.
Then what had happened?
Owen explained that the night before the fishing trip, he had heard his father say:
“I’ll take him somewhere safe.”
But Carl had answered:
“There is no safe place anymore.”
I looked at Mrs. Dilmore.
“I need to call the police.”
She immediately reached for her phone.
But before she could dial, I saw another line at the bottom of the page.
“Mom, if you’re reading this after the lake…”
I stopped breathing.
“…then Dad probably told you I fell.”
My entire body went numb.
The official story had always been that Owen slipped.
A tragic accident.
One terrible moment.
But my son had apparently known something was coming.
I read the next sentence.
“I didn’t fall.”
The room disappeared around me.
I gripped the desk.
“I saw Dad push someone into the water.”
I stared at the words.
Someone.
Not himself.
Not Owen.
Someone else.
Then I read:
“He thought I didn’t see.”
My hands were trembling uncontrollably now.
Owen had apparently witnessed an argument between his father and Carl near the shoreline.
Carl had threatened to tell me something.
My husband had shoved him.
Carl fell into the lake.
Owen ran.
But his father saw him.
And that’s when Owen wrote something that made my blood turn cold.
“Dad saw me watching.”
I couldn’t breathe.
“He told me to forget what I saw.”
Then:
“I told him I wouldn’t.”
The final page was covered with messy handwriting.
“Mom, if anything happens to me, please don’t believe Dad.”
“I love you.”
“I’m sorry.”
And beneath that was one final sentence.
“Carl isn’t dead.”
I looked up at Mrs. Dilmore.
“Carl is alive?”
She nodded slowly.
“I think that’s what Owen was trying to tell you.”
I immediately called the police.
Within an hour, investigators were at the school.
They took the letter.
They photographed every page.
Then one detective asked me a question.
“Where is your husband right now?”
I checked my phone.
He had called me seventeen times.
I hadn’t noticed.
Then a new message appeared.
“Where are you?”
Another followed.
“Why are you at Owen’s school?”
My stomach dropped.
He knew.
Somehow, he knew I had found the letter.
The detective took my phone.
“Don’t respond.”
Then his expression changed.
“Ma’am, we need to get you somewhere safe.”
I asked why.
He showed me a photograph on his phone.
It was taken from a traffic camera less than ten minutes earlier.
My husband was standing outside the school.
Watching the building.
But he wasn’t alone.
Carl was standing beside him.
The man everyone believed had been swept away by the lake was alive.
And he was looking directly toward the classroom window.
I felt my knees go weak.
Then the detective received a call.
He listened for several seconds.
His face became serious.
He lowered the phone.
“Ma’am…”
“What?”
“They just found something at the lake.”
“What?”
“A fishing boat.”
My heart stopped.
“Whose?”
He looked at me.
“Your husband’s.”
Then he added something that made the entire room go silent.
“There was blood inside.”
