The Photograph Revealed What Lucas Had Hidden

PART 2 — The Photograph Revealed What Lucas Had Hidden

I stared at the photograph for several seconds.

At first, I couldn’t understand what I was seeing.

Then I zoomed in.

My hands went completely cold.

It wasn’t a picture of Lucas and Melanie.

It was a picture of my house.

Taken from across the street.

And standing beside the mailbox was a man I recognized immediately.

Lucas’s father.

My father-in-law had been dead for six years.

I dropped the phone onto the desk.

“No…”

It couldn’t be him.

I picked it up again.

Zoomed in.

There was no mistake.

The photograph had been taken that morning.

And beneath it was another message.

“Ask Lucas what happened six years ago.”

My heart began pounding.

I immediately called the unknown number.

It rang once.

Twice.

Then someone answered.

A man’s voice whispered:

“Don’t trust anyone in that house.”

“Who are you?”

Silence.

“Tell me who you are!”

He hung up.

I stood frozen in the study.

Then I heard something upstairs.

A door closing.

My blood ran cold.

Lucas had supposedly already boarded his flight to Zurich.

So who was inside my house?

I grabbed my phone and quietly walked toward the staircase.

Every step felt impossibly loud.

Then I heard footsteps.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Coming from our bedroom.

I stopped.

My phone vibrated again.

Another message.

“Don’t go upstairs.”

I immediately backed away.

Then someone appeared at the top of the stairs.

It was Melanie.

Lucas’s pregnant mistress.

She was standing in my house.

Holding a folder.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then she slowly walked down the stairs.

“You know now,” she said.

I couldn’t move.

“How did you get in?”

She ignored my question.

“You need to listen to me.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Listen to you?”

“You’re carrying his child and you expect me to listen?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I never wanted to marry Lucas.”

That stopped me.

“What?”

She placed the folder on the table.

“I never wanted your husband.”

I stared at her.

“Then why are you pregnant?”

She looked down.

“Because Lucas isn’t the father.”

My entire body went numb.

“What did you say?”

She opened the folder.

Inside were medical records, photographs, bank statements, and several pages of handwritten notes.

“Lucas has been lying to both of us.”

I picked up the first document.

Then another.

Everything began connecting.

The Palm Springs condo wasn’t for Melanie.

It was for someone else.

The $720,000 wasn’t intended to build a new family.

Lucas was trying to move the money before someone could take it from him.

“Who?”

Melanie looked directly into my eyes.

“Your father-in-law.”

I shook my head.

“He’s dead.”

“No.”

She whispered:

“He disappeared.”

My stomach dropped.

“He staged his death.”

I remembered the photograph.

The man beside my mailbox.

Lucas’s father.

Alive.

Melanie continued.

“Six years ago, Lucas discovered that his father had been stealing money from several people.”

“Lucas confronted him.”

“And then his father disappeared.”

I stared at her.

“Why would Lucas pretend he was dead?”

“Because he was afraid.”

“Afraid of his own father?”

Melanie nodded.

“He thought his father would come back.”

Then she opened another document.

It was a bank transfer.

Six years old.

The recipient name was my husband’s.

My husband’s signature was underneath it.

I looked at Melanie.

“What is this?”

“Lucas didn’t tell you because he knew you’d leave.”

I couldn’t speak.

“He’s been paying his father for years.”

My knees weakened.

Then Melanie said the words that changed everything.

“The Zurich story wasn’t a plan to leave you.”

“Then what was it?”

She looked toward the window.

“To make you disappear.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

“Lucas knew his father was coming back.”

“And he needed someone to take the blame.”

I felt sick.

“You’re saying Lucas planned to kill me?”

Melanie shook her head.

“No.”

She looked terrified.

“Worse.”

“He planned to make it look like you killed yourself.”

The room went completely silent.

I looked down at my laptop.

The $720,000 transfer was still waiting for confirmation.

Then I understood why the unknown caller had warned me.

Why the photograph had been sent.

Why Melanie was standing inside my house.

I hadn’t discovered Lucas’s secret.

Someone had deliberately made sure I discovered it.

Because there was one thing nobody had told me.

The man who sent me that photograph wasn’t trying to save me.

He was trying to use me.

My phone vibrated again.

This time, the message contained only four words.

“Lucas is coming back.”

Then another message appeared.

“Tonight.”

I looked toward the front door.

A car had just stopped outside.

The headlights illuminated the living room.

Melanie grabbed my arm.

“Don’t answer it.”

The doorbell rang.

Once.

Twice.

Then a man’s voice came through the door.

“Open the door.”

It was Lucas.

My husband.

The man who was supposed to be thousands of miles away in Zurich.

I looked at Melanie.

She was trembling.

Then Lucas said something that made both of us freeze.

“I know you found the photograph.”
