PART 2 — THE $20,000 RECEIPT THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
At exactly ten the next morning, someone knocked on our apartment door.
No one moved.
Charles looked at his watch.
“He’s here.”
I opened the door.
Nathan stood in the hallway wearing an expensive suit.
For a moment, he looked at the apartment behind me.
Then his eyes moved toward his parents.
“Mom? Dad?”
Margaret didn’t answer.
Charles pointed toward the table.
“Sit down.”
Nathan slowly entered.
He looked uncomfortable.
“What’s going on?”
Charles placed the leather binder on the table.
“We want the truth.”
Nathan glanced at me.
“She has been filling your heads with lies.”
Margaret’s face hardened.
“Then explain why your children are living here.”
Nathan looked toward the bedroom.
“They’re fine.”
Lucas stepped into the hallway.
His face was thin.
His shoes were worn.
He looked at his father.
“Dad?”
Nathan froze.
Lucas didn’t run toward him.
He simply stood there.
“When are you coming back?”
Nathan looked away.
“I’ve been busy.”
My heart broke.
But I stayed silent.
Charles opened the binder.
“You told us the house was being renovated.”
“It is.”
“No,” Charles replied.
“The house was transferred eight months ago.”
Nathan’s face changed.
“You don’t understand.”
“Then explain it.”
Nathan reached for the papers.
Charles pulled them away.
“Not so fast.”
Margaret finally spoke.
“Where is our money?”
Nathan stared at her.
“What money?”
“The money you said was being used for the renovations.”
Silence.
Margaret’s voice trembled.
“You borrowed $20,000 from us last year.”
Nathan swallowed.
“I was going to pay it back.”
“You told us you needed it for the children.”
“I did.”
“No,” I said quietly.
“You gave it to Vanessa.”
Nathan looked at me.
“How do you know about Vanessa?”
I slid a bank statement across the table.
The transfer was clearly marked.
Twenty thousand dollars.
Sent to an account belonging to Vanessa’s mother.
Margaret picked up the paper.
Her hands began shaking.
Then she noticed something else.
There was a receipt attached to the statement.
A receipt for $20,000.
Nathan’s signature was at the bottom.
Margaret stared at it.
Then she looked at her son.
“What has my son done?”
I didn’t answer.
I didn’t need to.
Charles took the receipt from her hand.
“This is evidence.”
Nathan suddenly stood.
“You can’t use that against me.”
Charles looked at him.
“Actually, we can.”
Nathan’s expression changed.
“You don’t understand how this works.”
Charles leaned forward.
“I spent thirty years investigating financial misconduct in military contracts.”
He tapped the binder.
“And what you’ve done here isn’t a family disagreement.”
Nathan went silent.
“It’s fraud.”
Nathan looked at me.
“Mara, tell them this is a misunderstanding.”
I shook my head.
“You made your choices.”
Then my attorney entered the apartment.
Nathan looked shocked.
“You hired a lawyer?”
“Yes.”
My attorney placed a thick envelope on the table.
“We’ve already filed a motion.”
Nathan’s face went pale.
“For what?”
“Emergency child support.”
Nathan laughed nervously.
“You can’t do that.”
“We already did.”
Then my attorney placed another document beside it.
“There’s also a request to freeze several accounts connected to the property transfers.”
Nathan’s expression completely changed.
“You can’t freeze those accounts.”
“Why not?”
He didn’t answer.
My attorney looked at him.
“Because you know exactly what’s in them.”
Nathan suddenly grabbed his coat.
Charles stood.
“Sit down.”
Nathan stopped.
For the first time, I saw fear in his eyes.
Then Margaret asked the question none of us expected.
“Where is Vanessa?”
Nathan looked at her.
“She left.”
“When?”
“Yesterday.”
Margaret frowned.
“Where did she go?”
Nathan’s voice became quiet.
“I don’t know.”
My attorney opened another file.
“She withdrew nearly $60,000 from one of the accounts last night.”
Nathan’s face went white.
“What?”
“She also transferred ownership of another property.”
I looked at him.
“What property?”
My attorney looked at me.
“The lakeside cabin.”
I felt my stomach tighten.
“But that was already transferred.”
He shook his head.
“That transfer was never completed.”
Nathan stared at him.
“So where is it now?”
My attorney placed one final document on the table.
“The cabin is still legally yours.”
Nathan looked stunned.
Then Charles smiled for the first time.
“Your wife wasn’t as helpless as you thought.”
Nathan turned toward me.
“You planned all this?”
“No.”
I looked at Lucas and Emma.
“I simply stopped letting you destroy our lives.”
Then my attorney quietly added:
“There is one more thing.”
Everyone looked at him.
“We discovered that the $20,000 receipt isn’t the most important document.”
He pulled out another file.
“This one contains evidence that Nathan used his parents’ signatures on a separate financial agreement.”
Margaret’s face drained of color.
“You forged our signatures too?”
Nathan said nothing.
The room went completely silent.
Then Charles reached for his phone.
“I think it’s time we stop handling this as a family matter.”
He looked directly at Nathan.
“And let a judge decide what happens next.”
