PART 2 — THE SECRET HIDDEN IN OUR WEDDING VIDEO

PART 2 — THE SECRET HIDDEN IN OUR WEDDING VIDEO

I froze when I recognized the person in the mirror.

It was my maid of honor.

Rachel.

My best friend since college.

The woman who had stood beside me throughout the entire wedding.

The woman who had cried during my vows.

The woman I trusted more than almost anyone.

I stared at the screen.

“No…”

I replayed the footage.

There was no mistake.

Rachel was standing inside Carter’s private suite less than twenty minutes before I walked down the aisle.

And Carter had handed her something.

Something small.

Something she immediately hid inside her purse.

I grabbed my phone and called her.

She answered on the fourth ring.

“Hey! What’s up?”

Her voice sounded completely normal.

I didn’t mention the video.

Instead, I asked casually,

“Do you remember what happened before my wedding ceremony?”

There was a pause.

“Of course.”

“Were you with Carter?”

Another pause.

This one lasted longer.

“Why would you ask that?”

My hands began shaking.

“I’m watching the raw wedding footage.”

Silence.

Then Rachel said quietly,

“What did you see?”

That question told me everything.

She didn’t ask what I meant.

She didn’t ask what footage I was talking about.

She already knew.

I ended the call.

Then I watched the clip again.

This time, I noticed something on the table beside Carter.

A small white envelope.

I zoomed in.

There was a name written across it.

Mine.

I immediately searched through the original wedding photographs.

Then I found one.

It showed Carter standing beside the mirror.

The envelope wasn’t visible.

But Rachel was.

She was holding her purse.

And on the edge of the purse was the same small silver clasp I had seen in the video.

I called the videographer.

“Do you still have the original files?”

He sounded surprised.

“Yes.”

“Did you edit anything from the raw footage?”

“No. Why?”

“Can you send me every camera angle from that hallway?”

There was a pause.

“I’ll check.”

Twenty minutes later, he called back.

“There are three cameras that captured that area.”

My heart raced.

“Send them.”

He did.

I watched all three.

The first showed Carter entering the room.

The second showed Rachel arriving.

The third showed something I had never seen.

A man standing in the hallway.

Watching them.

I leaned closer.

The man was holding a folder.

Then he looked directly toward the camera.

I recognized him immediately.

It was Carter’s father.

But that wasn’t the strangest part.

The timestamp showed he had entered the hallway six minutes before Carter handed Rachel the envelope.

I watched the footage again.

Then I noticed Carter’s father wasn’t wearing his wedding suit.

He was wearing the same clothes he had worn during our rehearsal dinner the night before.

That meant he hadn’t gone home.

He had stayed at the venue overnight.

Why?

I called Carter.

He answered immediately.

“Hey, sweetheart.”

“Where was your father before our wedding?”

Silence.

“What kind of question is that?”

“I found something in the wedding footage.”

Another silence.

Then his voice changed.

“What did you find?”

I knew then.

He was afraid.

“Why did you give Rachel an envelope?”

Carter stopped breathing for a second.

Then he said:

“You weren’t supposed to see that.”

My stomach dropped.

“What was inside?”

“I can explain.”

“No.”

I stood up.

“Not anymore.”

Carter’s voice became desperate.

“Please listen to me.”

“Two years, Carter.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“From what?”

He didn’t answer.

“From whom?”

Still nothing.

Then he finally whispered:

“Your father.”

I couldn’t move.

My father had died three years before our wedding.

“What does my father have to do with this?”

Carter took a shaky breath.

“Everything.”

I sat back down.

He told me that the envelope Rachel had taken contained documents.

Documents my father had given Carter shortly before he died.

According to Carter, my father had discovered something about my family’s business.

Something involving missing money.

But Carter hadn’t told me because my father had made him promise.

I didn’t believe him.

“Then why did you say, ‘She can never know’?”

Carter went silent.

Finally, he said:

“Because your father didn’t want you to know the truth about how he died.”

My heart stopped.

“What are you saying?”

Before he could answer, the call suddenly disconnected.

I tried calling back.

No answer.

Then my laptop screen showed something I hadn’t noticed before.

The raw video had continued recording after Carter and Rachel left the room.

The camera had captured the hallway for another eleven minutes.

I pressed play.

At first, nothing happened.

Then Carter’s father entered the frame.

He looked directly at the camera.

And behind him was my father.

Alive.

Standing in that hallway.

Less than twenty minutes before my wedding.

My hands went completely numb.

Because my father had supposedly been dead for three years.

And the timestamp on the video was impossible to dispute.

I had just discovered that the biggest secret of my marriage wasn’t an affair.

It wasn’t money.

It wasn’t even Carter.

Someone had made sure I believed my father was dead.

And now I had proof that he had been alive on my wedding day.
