The Little Girl in the Photograph Wasn’t a Stranger

PART 2 — The Little Girl in the Photograph Wasn’t a Stranger

Ethan didn’t move.

Neither did I.

For several seconds, we simply stared at each other.

Then his eyes dropped to the package beside me.

“Claire…”

His voice was different.

Not angry.

Not confused.

Terrified.

I slowly stood up.

“What is this?”

He swallowed.

“You weren’t supposed to find that.”

The words hit me harder than anything else could have.

“Who is she?”

He looked away.

“The woman in the pictures.”

Silence.

“And the little girl?”

Ethan closed the bedroom door behind him.

Then he locked it.

My heart started racing.

“Why are you locking the door?”

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he walked toward the bed and sat down.

“Seven years ago,” he finally said, “I made a promise to someone.”

“Who?”

“My sister.”

I stared at him.

“Ethan, you don’t have a sister.”

“I did.”

His voice cracked.

“She died when I was twenty-six.”

I didn’t know what to say.

He opened the package and pulled out one of the photographs.

The woman was standing outside a restaurant.

“Her name was Rachel.”

He pointed to the little girl.

“And that’s Lily.”

“Your niece?”

He nodded.

“Then why were you following them?”

Ethan’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because I wasn’t following them.”

He turned the photograph over.

“I was protecting them.”

My confusion only grew.

“From who?”

He looked directly at me.

“From the man who killed my sister.”

My stomach dropped.

“What?”

Ethan lowered his voice.

“Rachel didn’t die in an accident.”

I stepped backward.

“Then what happened?”

“Someone made it look like one.”

He pulled out another photograph.

This one showed a man standing across the street from Rachel.

I’d never seen him before.

But Ethan had written something on the back.

HE FOUND HER.

I looked at my husband.

“Who is that?”

Ethan didn’t answer.

Instead, he reached into the package and pulled out a small envelope.

My name was written across it.

This time, I knew immediately it was meant for me.

I stared at him.

“You had a letter for me?”

“I wrote it months ago.”

“Why didn’t you give it to me?”

“Because I was hoping I’d never have to.”

My hands shook as I opened it.

There were only a few lines.

Claire, if you’re reading this, something has happened to me.

Do not trust anyone who tells you Rachel’s death was an accident.

Then I saw the final sentence.

Most importantly, don’t let Lily know who her real father is.

I looked up.

“Lily’s father?”

Ethan’s face went pale.

“Claire, that’s why I hid everything.”

“Who is her father?”

He stared at me for a long moment.

Then someone knocked on our bedroom door.

Three slow knocks.

Ethan froze.

I whispered, “Who is that?”

He didn’t answer.

Another knock.

Then a man’s voice came from the other side.

“Ethan, I know she’s in there.”

My blood ran cold.

Ethan grabbed my hand.

“Whatever happens, don’t open that door.”

The man outside laughed quietly.

Then he said something that made Ethan’s face completely collapse.

“I know you found the photographs.”

I looked at Ethan.

“How does he know?”

Ethan squeezed my hand.

And for the first time in seven years, I saw genuine fear in my husband’s eyes.

Then the man outside said:

“Claire, you should ask your husband why your name is in Rachel’s old police file.”

I couldn’t breathe.

Because I had never met Rachel.

I’d never even heard her name before tonight.

So why…

was my name in her file?
