The Man Behind Claire’s Door

PART 2 — The Man Behind Claire’s Door

Claire stopped the moment she saw me.

Her face went completely white.

Then she looked at the man standing behind the door.

“Ryan…”

He didn’t answer.

I stared between them.

“You knew.”

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“I can explain.”

“You’ve had a year.”

My voice shook.

“A whole year while I was grieving him.”

She stepped closer.

“I didn’t know what to do.”

I pointed at the man.

“Then tell me who he is.”

Ryan looked at me.

“I am Ryan.”

My knees nearly gave out.

I grabbed the doorframe.

“But you’re dead.”

“I know.”

“You were declared dead.”

“I know.”

“They found your ring.”

“I know.”

“Your wallet.”

“I know.”

“Then why didn’t you come home?”

His eyes dropped.

“Because I couldn’t.”

Claire started crying.

I looked at her.

“Why did you bring him here?”

She wiped her face.

“I didn’t bring him here.”

“What does that mean?”

Ryan answered.

“She found me.”

I stared at Claire.

“How?”

She took a shaky breath.

“Six months after the accident, I received a phone call.”

“From who?”

“Ryan.”

The room went silent.

I couldn’t breathe.

“He told me he was alive,” Claire continued.

“He said he had been rescued by another fishing crew.”

I looked at Ryan.

“Then why didn’t you contact me?”

He looked away.

“Because someone was looking for me.”

“Who?”

He didn’t answer.

Claire stepped forward.

“Ryan wasn’t the man everyone thought he was.”

My stomach tightened.

“What are you talking about?”

She looked at him.

Then back at me.

“Your husband had another identity.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

Ryan slowly walked toward the table.

He picked up the second passport.

He opened it.

The photograph was him.

But the name wasn’t Ryan.

I recognized the surname immediately.

It belonged to a wealthy family I’d heard about for years.

“Why does he have that name?”

Ryan sat down.

“Because it’s my real name.”

My heart sank.

“Then who was my husband?”

He looked directly at me.

“The man you married was real.”

I frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“I loved you.”

“Then explain everything.”

He took a deep breath.

“Before I met you, I was involved in something dangerous.”

“What?”

“Financial crimes.”

I stared at him.

He quickly shook his head.

“Not by choice.”

“My father controlled a company that was laundering money.”

“I discovered it.”

“And when I tried to expose him, he threatened everyone I loved.”

I felt tears running down my face.

“So you disappeared?”

“I changed my identity.”

“And you never told me?”

“I thought keeping you ignorant would keep you safe.”

I laughed bitterly.

“It destroyed me.”

He looked devastated.

“I know.”

I turned toward Claire.

“And you?”

She lowered her head.

“I found him because he contacted me.”

“Why you?”

“Because he was afraid to contact you.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You watched me mourn him.”

“I know.”

“You watched me sleep in his clothes.”

Claire began sobbing.

“I wanted to tell you.”

“Then why didn’t you?”

She looked at Ryan.

“Because he asked me not to.”

I stared at him.

“You made my sister lie to me?”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“You don’t get to decide what destroys me.”

Silence filled the apartment.

Then I noticed something on the table.

A newspaper.

The headline was about Ryan’s death.

But beneath it was another article.

A photograph of the same man.

The headline read:

MISSING FINANCIAL INVESTIGATOR BELIEVED TO BE ALIVE.

I picked it up.

“Who wrote this?”

Ryan’s expression changed.

“That’s why we have to leave tonight.”

“Why?”

He looked toward the hallway.

“Because the people who caused the boat fire know I’m alive.”

My blood ran cold.

“Boat fire?”

He nodded.

“It wasn’t an accident.”

I stared at him.

“Someone tried to kill you.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Before he could answer, the lights suddenly went out.

Claire screamed.

Ryan grabbed my arm.

“Don’t move.”

A loud crash came from the front door.

Then footsteps.

Someone was inside the apartment.

Ryan whispered:

“They found us.”

I heard a man’s voice from the hallway.

“Ryan!”

My heart stopped.

The voice sounded familiar.

Too familiar.

Then the man stepped into the dim light.

And I recognized him immediately.

It was the same person who had stood beside me at Ryan’s funeral.

The man who had told me there was no hope.

The man who had promised me Ryan was never coming back.

Ryan looked at him and whispered:

“My father.”

But his father wasn’t looking at Ryan.

He was staring directly at me.

Then he said:

“You were never supposed to find out your husband was alive.”
