The Lie Daniel Never Expected Me to Discover

PART 2 — The Lie Daniel Never Expected Me to Discover

I thought leaving that wedding would be the end of it.

I was wrong.

Three days later, Adrian called me.

“I found something.”

His voice sounded different.

“What?”

“Remember when I told you Daniel recognized me?”

“Yes.”

“There was a reason.”

I sat down.

“Tell me.”

Adrian was quiet for a moment.

“Before I started working with Daniel, I was hired by his company for a private event.”

“What kind of event?”

“A corporate retreat.”

My stomach tightened.

“When?”

“About two years before you and Daniel divorced.”

I suddenly remembered that year.

Daniel had been traveling constantly.

He always claimed it was because his company was expanding.

Adrian continued.

“I didn’t know who he was back then. But I remembered him.”

“Why?”

“Because of what happened at that retreat.”

“What happened?”

Adrian told me Daniel had spent several hours privately meeting with a woman from another company.

That alone wouldn’t have meant anything.

Except the woman was the same person Daniel later claimed he had never met.

The same woman whose name had appeared in one of the financial documents I discovered during our divorce.

I felt my hands go cold.

“Are you saying Daniel was involved with her before our divorce?”

“I don’t know if they were having an affair.”

“But?”

“But I know they were working together.”

I remembered all those years when Daniel told me I was imagining things.

Every suspicious phone call.

Every unexplained trip.

Every time he accused me of being paranoid.

Suddenly, the memories looked different.

Adrian sent me copies of the documents he had kept.

There were dates.

Names.

Payments.

Meetings.

And one signature appeared again and again.

Daniel’s.

I stared at the screen.

“How did I never see this?”

“Because you trusted him.”

That sentence hurt more than I expected.

I had spent years thinking I was foolish for believing him.

But Adrian made me realize something.

Trusting someone wasn’t stupidity.

Using that trust against someone was the betrayal.

Then I noticed something else.

A payment had been made to a private investigator.

The date was six months before my divorce.

I called Adrian immediately.

“Why would Daniel hire a private investigator?”

He hesitated.

“To investigate you.”

My heart dropped.

“What?”

Adrian sent me another document.

It contained my name.

My address.

My workplace.

Even the names of people I had spoken to.

Daniel had been monitoring me.

Not because he thought I was cheating.

Because he wanted to know whether I had discovered what he was doing.

I sat in silence.

For years, he had convinced me that I was insecure.

That I overreacted.

That I imagined problems.

But he had been gathering information about me the entire time.

Then I saw the final page.

It contained a handwritten note.

If she finds out, make her believe she’s unstable.

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

I couldn’t breathe.

Adrian stayed silent on the phone.

Finally, I said:

“He planned this.”

“Yes.”

“Even the divorce?”

“I don’t know.”

I looked at the date on the document.

It was written nearly a year before Daniel filed for divorce.

That was when everything inside me finally clicked.

Daniel hadn’t simply fallen out of love with me.

He had been preparing an exit.

He wanted to control the story.

He wanted everyone to believe I was the difficult wife.

The jealous wife.

The unstable wife.

And for years, I had helped him do it by questioning myself.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Vanessa.

We need to talk.

I almost ignored it.

Instead, I agreed to meet.

She arrived at the café looking exhausted.

“I owe you an apology,” she said.

“You don’t.”

“I do.”

She placed a folder on the table.

“I found these in Daniel’s office.”

My stomach tightened.

“What are they?”

She opened the folder.

Inside were copies of messages between Daniel and several people.

Some were about me.

Some were about Vanessa.

But one message made my blood run cold.

It had been sent only weeks before the wedding.

Daniel had written:

Once she sees me happily married, she’ll finally stop looking into the past.

Vanessa looked at me.

“I thought he was talking about you.”

“He was.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

I looked at her.

“He was talking about someone else.”

“Who?”

She pulled out one final photograph.

I recognized the woman immediately.

She was the same woman Adrian had seen Daniel meeting years earlier.

But there was something else.

Written on the back was a date.

And underneath it were four words:

She knows everything now.

I looked up.

“Who is she?”

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“She was Daniel’s business partner.”

“And?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“She was also his first wife.”

I froze.

“First wife?”

Vanessa nodded.

“And according to these documents…”

She pushed the folder toward me.

“…Daniel never legally divorced her.”

I stared at the papers.

Suddenly, the wedding.

The lies.

The secret meetings.

The fake confidence.

Everything made sense.

Daniel hadn’t just betrayed me.

He had built his entire life on lies.

And now those lies were finally catching up with him.

I left the café without saying another word.

Outside, Adrian was waiting.

I looked at him.

“I think it’s finally over.”

He smiled.

“No.”

I frowned.

“What?”

He pointed toward the street.

A black SUV had stopped across from us.

Daniel stepped out.

He looked directly at me.

Then he crossed the street.

But he wasn’t angry.

He was terrified.

He stopped a few feet away.

“I need your help.”

I almost laughed.

“After everything you’ve done?”

He shook his head.

“You don’t understand.”

“Understand what?”

He looked over his shoulder.

Then whispered:

“She isn’t trying to expose me.”

“Who?”

Daniel’s face went completely white.

“My first wife.”

He looked directly into my eyes.

“She wants to expose what we did together.”

I froze.

“What did you do?”

Daniel took a step closer.

And then he said something that made me realize the story I thought I knew was only the beginning.

“You were never supposed to be the victim.”
