The Mark on My Niece’s Back Revealed a Secret Our Family Had Buried for Years

PART 2 — The Mark on My Niece’s Back Revealed a Secret Our Family Had Buried for Years

I slowly turned the baby over.

At first, I saw nothing unusual.

Then I noticed the mark.

A small crescent-shaped birthmark sat just beneath her left shoulder blade.

Ryan looked like he’d seen a ghost.

Melissa covered her mouth.

“Why?” I whispered. “Why does that mark matter?”

Ryan couldn’t answer.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out an old photograph.

It was our mother holding me as a baby.

I stared at the picture.

Then I saw it.

The exact same mark was visible on Mom’s back.

My stomach dropped.

“That doesn’t mean anything,” I whispered.

Ryan shook his head.

“It does to Dad.”

I looked at him.

Our father had died almost twenty years earlier.

“What are you talking about?”

Ryan finally told me something he’d discovered while cleaning out our parents’ storage unit.

He had found a sealed medical file hidden inside an old metal box.

The file contained records from before we were born.

And one page mentioned a baby girl.

A baby our parents had supposedly given up for adoption.

But there was something strange.

The records said the baby had the same crescent-shaped birthmark.

I looked down at the newborn in my arms.

“No.”

Ryan’s voice cracked.

“We thought she was connected to that story.”

Melissa stepped closer.

“But this is our daughter. The fertility clinic confirmed everything.”

Ryan nodded.

“That’s what I thought too.”

Then he pulled out another document.

It was from the fertility clinic.

Their embryo records had been reviewed after an administrative error was discovered.

The clinic had discovered something they hadn’t told Melissa and Ryan before the birth.

There had been a mix-up involving the genetic records.

The baby wasn’t genetically related to Melissa.

And Ryan’s DNA didn’t match the child either.

Melissa began crying.

“So whose baby is she?”

Ryan looked at me.

“That’s what scares me.”

He pointed to the genetic report.

The baby had a partial genetic match to someone in our family.

Someone who was supposed to be dead.

Our mother.

I felt dizzy.

“That’s impossible.”

Ryan shook his head.

“I know.”

Then a doctor entered the room.

He looked nervous.

“Mr. and Mrs. Carter, we need to speak privately.”

Melissa wiped her tears.

“About the baby?”

The doctor nodded.

“We found the original genetic records.”

He placed a folder on the table.

“The embryo transfer documentation was altered.”

Ryan stared at him.

“Altered by who?”

“We don’t know yet.”

The doctor opened the file.

“But whoever changed those records wanted this child to be born.”

My skin went cold.

“Why would anyone do that?”

The doctor looked at me.

“We believe the embryo may have been created using genetic material connected to your family.”

Ryan stepped forward.

“Connected how?”

The doctor hesitated.

“Your mother’s medical records indicate she participated in an experimental fertility program decades ago.”

I couldn’t breathe.

Our mother had never told us.

Then the doctor added something even more disturbing.

“She wasn’t the only participant.”

Ryan looked at me.

I could see the fear in his eyes.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A man’s voice said only one sentence.

“Stop asking questions about the baby.”

Ryan’s face went pale.

“Who is this?”

The caller hung up.

Melissa grabbed his arm.

“What did he say?”

Ryan didn’t answer.

He looked down at the baby.

Then at me.

Someone knew we were investigating.

And someone was desperate for us to stop.

That was when I noticed something tucked inside the baby’s hospital blanket.

A tiny envelope.

My name was written on it.

I opened it with trembling hands.

Inside was a photograph of our mother.

She was much younger.

Standing beside a doctor.

The same doctor who had just walked out of our room.

I stared at the photograph.

Then I turned toward the hallway.

The doctor was gone.

Ryan ran after him.

But by the time he reached the elevators, the man had disappeared.

When Ryan returned, he was holding another document.

It was an old consent form.

Our mother’s signature was at the bottom.

And beside it was a handwritten note:

“If my daughter ever has a child, this child must never be allowed to leave the hospital.”

I looked down at the newborn.

“What does that mean?”

Ryan’s face was white.

“I don’t know.”

Then the hospital administrator entered.

She locked the door behind her.

And whispered the words that made all three of us freeze.

“Your mother didn’t die naturally.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

“She was silenced because she discovered what this clinic had been doing.”

Melissa started crying again.

Ryan looked at the baby.

And suddenly, I understood why he had refused to take her home.

He wasn’t rejecting his daughter.

He was terrified someone would hurt her.

But the administrator wasn’t finished.

She placed one final file in front of us.

Inside was a list of names.

Our mother’s name was there.

Then mine.

Then Ryan’s.

And beneath our names was the name of the newborn girl.

Someone had been tracking our family for decades.

And apparently, the birth of this baby was the moment they had been waiting for.

Then the administrator whispered,

“Take her home tonight.”

Ryan stared at her.

“Why?”

“Because if you don’t, the people who ordered this will come back.”

I held the baby tighter.

And suddenly, the tiny girl everyone had been waiting years to welcome home wasn’t just a newborn anymore.

She was the only living evidence of a secret our parents had died protecting.

And someone was already coming to find her.
