The Retired Sheriff Wasn’t Who Everyone Thought

PART 2 — The Retired Sheriff Wasn’t Who Everyone Thought

The next morning, Malcolm drove me to Grayhaven.

Neither of us said much during the trip.

I kept staring at the medical report in my lap.

Six years.

Six years of believing my body had betrayed me.

Six years of treatments Adrian knew might never have been necessary.

When we arrived at the clinic, a woman in a white coat was waiting.

“Vanessa?”

I nodded.

“I’m Dr. Eleanor Pierce.”

She looked at Malcolm.

“It’s good to see you again.”

I froze.

“You know him?”

She smiled faintly.

“Everyone in this field knows Malcolm Hartwell.”

I looked at him.

He didn’t react.

Dr. Pierce led us into a private office.

Then she closed the door.

“I reviewed your records last night,” she said. “There is something you need to understand.”

My heart started racing.

“You are not infertile.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

“You have never had the medical condition your husband claimed you had.”

Tears immediately filled my eyes.

“Then why did nobody tell me?”

She looked uncomfortable.

“Because your previous records were altered.”

I looked at Malcolm.

He was already watching me.

“Who altered them?”

Dr. Pierce hesitated.

“Someone with access to the clinic’s internal system.”

My stomach tightened.

“Adrian?”

“We can’t say that yet.”

“But we can investigate it.”

Malcolm’s voice was calm.

Dr. Pierce nodded.

“I suspected something was wrong years ago.”

I looked at Malcolm.

“How?”

He finally explained.

Before retiring, he had spent years investigating a network of financial fraud involving several private medical facilities.

One of those investigations had uncovered suspicious payments.

Payments connected to Adrian.

My husband had been secretly paying someone at the clinic to manipulate records.

Not just mine.

Several women’s.

The purpose was simple.

Make them believe they were infertile.

Then make them desperate enough to keep paying for unnecessary treatments.

I covered my mouth.

“How much money?”

Malcolm looked at me.

“More than you could imagine.”

I suddenly remembered all the savings Adrian had insisted we spend on treatments.

Every appointment.

Every procedure.

Every prescription.

Every time he told me we needed to try one more thing.

It hadn’t just been cruelty.

It had been profitable.

But there was another question.

“Then why did he leave me when Vanessa became pregnant?”

Malcolm’s expression hardened.

“Because Vanessa wasn’t supposed to become pregnant.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

He slid another document across the table.

A fertility report.

Vanessa’s name was on it.

So was Adrian’s.

I read the conclusion.

My hands started shaking.

“This says…”

Malcolm nodded.

“Vanessa’s pregnancy wasn’t the result of Adrian’s fertility treatment.”

I looked up.

“Then whose baby is she carrying?”

Nobody answered.

Dr. Pierce finally spoke.

“That is what we’re trying to determine.”

For the next several weeks, Malcolm helped me rebuild my life.

I found a small apartment.

My attorney filed the necessary paperwork.

The financial records were frozen where legally possible.

And for the first time in years, I stopped living according to Adrian’s expectations.

Then came the appointment that changed everything.

Dr. Pierce looked at the ultrasound screen.

She smiled.

“Vanessa, I need you to prepare yourself.”

My heart raced.

“Why?”

She turned the monitor toward me.

“There are two.”

I stared at the screen.

“Two?”

She nodded.

“Twins.”

I started crying.

Not because I was afraid.

Because after six years of being told I couldn’t become a mother, I was looking at two tiny heartbeats.

Malcolm stood beside me.

He placed a hand gently on my shoulder.

“You see?”

I laughed through my tears.

“You knew.”

“I suspected.”

Six months later, my pregnancy was impossible to hide.

Then one afternoon, Adrian showed up outside the clinic.

He looked different.

Older.

Exhausted.

His expensive suit was gone.

His confidence was gone too.

He stared at my stomach.

“Are you pregnant?”

I didn’t answer.

His eyes widened.

“With twins?”

I simply nodded.

He stepped backward.

“How?”

Before I could respond, Malcolm walked out of the building.

Adrian’s face changed instantly.

“You.”

Malcolm stopped.

“Hello, Adrian.”

Adrian stared at him.

“You said you were retired.”

“I am.”

“Then why are you involved in this?”

Malcolm smiled.

“Because Vanessa hired me.”

Adrian’s face went pale.

“You don’t understand who you’re dealing with.”

Malcolm’s expression became completely serious.

“No, Adrian.”

“You don’t understand who you’re dealing with.”

Adrian stared at him.

Then Malcolm reached into his jacket and handed him a card.

Adrian looked down.

His hands began trembling.

The card didn’t identify Malcolm as a retired sheriff.

It identified him as something else.

Something Adrian had apparently never known.

Federal Investigator — Special Consultant.

Adrian looked up.

“You were investigating me?”

“For three years.”

His face drained of color.

Malcolm leaned closer.

“And we have enough evidence to prove that you deliberately concealed your infertility, manipulated medical records, and participated in a financial scheme that harmed dozens of women.”

Adrian couldn’t speak.

Then his eyes moved toward me.

“You knew?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

He swallowed.

“Then why are you carrying twins?”

I looked at him.

“Because the problem was never me.”

His face collapsed.

But Malcolm wasn’t finished.

He handed Adrian one final envelope.

Inside was a DNA report.

Adrian opened it.

He read the first page.

Then the second.

His hands started shaking violently.

He looked at Malcolm.

“Where did you get this?”

Malcolm said nothing.

Adrian slowly looked at me.

And suddenly, the color disappeared from his face.

Because the DNA report wasn’t about the twins.

It was about Vanessa’s baby.

And the result proved something that was about to destroy Adrian’s entire new life.
