PART 2 — The Secret My Stepfather Had Hidden for Ten Years
The room went completely silent.
My sister stared at the paper in my hand.
Then she looked toward the three tables behind her.
A man slowly stood.
Her face changed instantly.
“No,” she whispered.
I watched her step backward.
The man was someone she knew.
Someone she had been secretly meeting for months.
Someone who had never been supposed to be at my anniversary party.
My sister looked at me.
“How did you know?”
I folded my arms.
“Because Eric isn’t the only person who lied to me.”
Eric stood frozen beside the cake table.
He looked at the laboratory report.
Then at me.
“Please,” he whispered.
I turned toward him.
“You had four months to tell me the truth.”
He lowered his head.
My sister suddenly started crying.
“This isn’t fair!”
I almost laughed.
“Fair?”
She had just announced her pregnancy with my husband in front of three hundred people.
She had expected me to collapse.
Instead, I handed the microphone back to the DJ.
Then I looked toward the man in the gray suit.
“Tell them what you found.”
He opened his folder.
“There are photographs, financial records, hotel receipts, and communications between Eric and several women.”
The room erupted.
My mother covered her mouth.
Eric tried to interrupt.
“That isn’t what it looks like.”
The investigator looked at him.
“It is exactly what it looks like.”
Then he placed another document on the table.
“This is the reason Mrs. Bennett hired me.”
I picked it up.
It wasn’t about Eric.
It was about my sister.
And the date on the document was six months before my sister claimed she had started seeing him.
I looked at her.
“You’ve been lying about the timeline.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“Yes.”
She began crying harder.
Then my stepfather suddenly stood.
“Enough.”
Everyone turned toward him.
His voice was shaking.
“Please.”
I stared at him.
“What are you afraid of?”
He didn’t answer.
I walked closer.
“You’ve been shaking since she made that announcement.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“I know.”
“Why?”
He looked at my sister.
Then at me.
Finally, he whispered:
“Because I knew this day would come.”
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?”
He looked around the room.
Then he said something that made the entire celebration disappear into silence.
“Your sister isn’t the first person in this family to betray you.”
I couldn’t move.
“What are you talking about?”
He reached into his jacket.
He pulled out an old photograph.
It was badly faded.
The picture showed my mother standing beside a much younger man.
I recognized him immediately.
My biological father.
I hadn’t seen his face since I was a child.
But there was something else in the photograph.
A baby.
My sister.
I stared at it.
“Why do you have this?”
My stepfather’s voice broke.
“Because your mother told me never to show it to you.”
I looked at my mother.
She had gone completely pale.
“Mom?”
She wouldn’t look at me.
My stepfather continued.
“Your mother didn’t tell you the truth about your father.”
My heart started pounding.
“What truth?”
He looked directly into my eyes.
“The man you were told abandoned this family didn’t leave.”
I felt the room spinning.
“He was forced to disappear.”
“By who?”
My stepfather closed his eyes.
Then he said:
“By me.”
My mother gasped.
My sister stopped crying.
Even Eric looked stunned.
I stepped backward.
“You?”
He nodded.
“I thought I was protecting your mother.”
“From my father?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
He looked at the photograph again.
“Because your father wasn’t the man your mother told you he was.”
I stared at him.
“Then who was he?”
My stepfather’s face crumpled.
“He was your mother’s first husband.”
I froze.
My mother had never told me that.
But my stepfather wasn’t finished.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out one final envelope.
It was old.
Yellowed.
And my name was written across the front in handwriting I had never seen before.
“This arrived ten years ago,” he said.
“Why didn’t you give it to me?”
His eyes filled with tears.
“Because the letter inside explains who your real father is.”
I reached for it.
Then he whispered:
“And it also explains why your mother was so desperate to keep you from finding him.”
I looked at my mother.
She finally raised her eyes.
And the fear on her face told me one thing.
Whatever was inside that envelope…
she had been terrified of it for decades.
