PART 2 — What Ethan Did Inside That Hospital Room
I drove to Silvermere Medical Center without knowing what to expect.
Celeste was waiting for me near the entrance.
The moment she saw me, she hugged me tightly.
She was crying.
“Is Nora okay?” I asked.
“She is,” Celeste whispered. “But you need to see this.”
She led me through the hallway.
When we reached Nora’s room, I stopped outside the door.
Through the glass, I could see Ethan sitting beside her bed.
His shaved head was still fresh.
But that wasn’t what caught my attention.
There were dozens of handmade cards covering the walls.
Photographs.
Drawings.
Small notes from students.
Teachers.
Hospital staff.
Even children from Nora’s treatment center.
I looked at Celeste.
“What is all this?”
She wiped her tears.
“Your son started something.”
I opened the door.
Ethan looked up.
“Dad?”
I walked toward him.
“What did you do?”
He smiled nervously.
“I didn’t do much.”
Nora laughed softly from the bed.
“He’s lying.”
I looked at her.
She was weak, but she was smiling.
“What happened?”
Nora pointed toward the wall.
Ethan had created a campaign at school called Brave Heads.
He had asked students to shave their heads, wear colorful caps, or simply take a picture with someone facing treatment.
His message was simple.
Nobody should feel alone because their body has changed.
At first, only three students participated.
Then ten.
Then twenty.
Within a week, more than a hundred students had joined.
Teachers started sharing the photos.
Local businesses offered free meals to families traveling for treatment.
A barber donated his time.
And someone had even arranged transportation for parents who couldn’t afford the long trips to the hospital.
I looked at Ethan.
“You organized all this?”
He shrugged.
“I just didn’t want Nora to think she was different.”
Nora reached for his hand.
“You changed everything.”
I swallowed hard.
Then Celeste said something that surprised me.
“That’s not what I wanted you to see.”
I turned toward her.
“What else did he do?”
She pointed toward a chair in the corner.
There was a small box sitting on it.
Ethan looked uncomfortable.
“Dad, you don’t have to—”
I opened it.
Inside was a stack of envelopes.
Each one had a name written on it.
Nora’s parents.
Another family.
Then another.
I looked at Ethan.
“What are these?”
He lowered his head.
“The money I saved.”
I stared at him.
“What money?”
“My college savings.”
My heart stopped.
“You didn’t.”
“I did.”
He had been saving for college for years.
Every birthday.
Every holiday.
Every summer job.
He had put almost everything aside.
But now he had used it to help families who couldn’t afford travel, meals, and other expenses during treatment.
“You gave away your college money?”
He nodded.
“I can work for college.”
I couldn’t speak.
Then Nora suddenly started crying.
Ethan moved closer to her.
“Hey.”
She shook her head.
“I don’t want you giving up your future because of me.”
He smiled.
“You’re not taking anything from me.”
Then he looked at me.
“Dad, I don’t know if I can fix what she’s going through.”
His voice cracked.
“But I can make sure she doesn’t go through it alone.”
I turned away because I didn’t want him to see me crying.
Then Celeste quietly touched my shoulder.
“There is one more thing.”
I looked at her.
She handed me a folder.
“This came from the hospital this morning.”
Inside was a letter from the medical team.
I read the first few lines.
Then my hands began trembling.
It wasn’t a thank-you letter.
It was a request.
The hospital had discovered that Nora’s treatment plan might need to change.
There was another specialist.
Another option.
But the treatment was expensive.
And there was one problem.
Insurance wouldn’t cover it.
I looked at Ethan.
He already knew.
“You knew?”
He nodded.
“I found out yesterday.”
“And that’s why you gave away your savings?”
“Yes.”
I closed the folder.
Then Ethan said something that broke my heart.
“I know it might not work.”
He looked at Nora.
“But if there’s even a small chance…”
He took her hand.
“I want her to have that chance.”
I hugged my son.
For the first time, I realized he hadn’t simply shaved his head for Nora.
He had decided to stand beside her in every way he possibly could.
But then Celeste received a phone call.
She listened silently.
Her face changed.
She slowly lowered the phone.
“What happened?” I asked.
She looked at Ethan.
Then at Nora.
“The specialist just called.”
Everyone became quiet.
Celeste’s eyes filled with tears.
“He reviewed Nora’s case.”
She paused.
“And he says there may be something they can do.”
But then she added:
“He also wants to meet the person who started Brave Heads.”
Ethan looked confused.
“Why?”
Celeste handed him the phone.
The specialist had sent one final message.
“I believe your son may have unintentionally started something much bigger than he realizes.”
