PART 2 — THE DNA TEST REVEALED WHY MY SISTER’S $8 MILLION CLAIM WAS NEVER ABOUT THE MONEY
I drove for nearly twenty minutes before the pickup truck finally pulled alongside me.
Ethan lowered his window.
“Claire, please pull over.”
I hesitated.
Then I turned into a quiet parking lot.
Ethan got out.
He looked exhausted.
“I’m sorry for following you.”
“I know why you did.”
He stared at the ground.
“You believe Sophie lied.”
“I believe something is very wrong.”
He nodded.
“Me too.”
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Ethan pulled a sealed envelope from his jacket.
“I had a DNA test done on Noah six months ago.”
My stomach tightened.
“Why?”
“Because Sophie asked me to.”
He handed me the envelope.
“She told me Adrian had been acting strangely around Noah. She said there was a possibility…”
He couldn’t finish.
I opened the report.
The result was clear.
Adrian was not Noah’s biological father.
I looked at Ethan.
“So Sophie knew.”
He nodded.
“She knew before Adrian died.”
That explained everything.
But it also raised a bigger question.
“If she knew Noah wasn’t Adrian’s son, why would she announce the opposite?”
Ethan looked at me.
“Because the DNA test wasn’t the only test she had.”
He pulled out his phone.
“There was another sample.”
Adrian had apparently undergone genetic testing shortly before his death.
Not a paternity test.
Something much more complicated.
Ethan showed me a photograph of the report.
At the bottom was a name.
Noah Bennett.
My heart started pounding.
“Why would Adrian have Noah tested?”
“I don’t know.”
Then Ethan said something that made me go completely still.
“Sophie wasn’t trying to prove Noah was Adrian’s son.”
“She was trying to force you to take a DNA test.”
“Why?”
“Because she knew the result would change who inherited the estate.”
I stared at him.
“Ethan, what are you talking about?”
He lowered his voice.
“Adrian left instructions with his attorney.”
Apparently, two months before his death, Adrian had discovered something about our family.
Something involving Sophie.
Something involving me.
And something that had happened before either of us were born.
His attorney had been instructed to release certain documents only if someone challenged the estate.
Sophie had unknowingly triggered that condition by presenting the fake will.
The next morning, I met Adrian’s attorney.
His name was Martin Hale.
He placed a thick file on the conference table.
“I’ve been waiting for this.”
I stared at him.
“What did Adrian know?”
Martin opened the first document.
It was an old hospital record.
Then another.
And another.
All from the year I was born.
My mother had given birth to twins.
But only one child had been registered.
Me.
I looked up.
“That’s impossible.”
Martin shook his head.
“Your parents were told the second baby had died.”
My hands began trembling.
“Then what happened?”
He pushed another document toward me.
A birth certificate.
The name on it wasn’t mine.
It belonged to a baby girl.
Sophie Bennett.
I couldn’t breathe.
Martin continued.
“Adrian discovered this six months before his death.”
I stared at the papers.
“My sister…”
“Is actually your biological twin.”
Everything around me seemed to disappear.
Then Martin opened the final envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter from Adrian.
My husband had written:
“Claire, if Sophie ever claims Noah is my son, don’t fight her over the money. Let her expose herself.”
I read the sentence again.
Then the next one.
“Because Noah isn’t the heir she’s looking for.”
My heart slammed against my ribs.
Martin looked at me.
“Your husband left one final instruction.”
“What?”
“If Sophie ever demanded half of your estate…”
He paused.
“You were to be given the original hospital records.”
I stared at him.
Then I understood.
Sophie hadn’t suddenly discovered that Noah was Adrian’s son.
She had known the truth for months.
The fake will was bait.
She wanted to force Adrian’s estate into court.
Because she believed something inside those old records would reveal a secret worth far more than eight million dollars.
And according to Martin…
she was right.
Because the hospital records contained one final page.
A page proving that the people who raised me…
had known exactly where my biological mother was for more than thirty years.
And she was still alive.
