PART 2 — WE FOLLOWED ADRIAN AND DISCOVERED WHY HE NEVER STAYED PAST 7:30
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Mom was still staring into the open briefcase.
Inside were neatly organized folders, medical receipts, prescription records, photographs, and a small notebook filled with handwritten times and names.
I looked at Sophie.
“Where did you get this?”
She wiped her cheeks.
“I followed him.”
Mom’s face tightened.
“You followed Adrian?”
Sophie nodded.
“After he left your birthday dinner, I waited until he turned the corner. Then I followed him.”
“You’re fifteen,” I whispered. “You could have been hurt.”
“I know.”
Her voice broke.
“But I had to know why he was always leaving.”
She pointed toward the briefcase.
“He drove south again.”
Mom slowly sat down.
“Where?”
Sophie hesitated.
“To Willowcrest Medical Center.”
My stomach tightened.
“Why would he go there?”
“I didn’t know.”
Sophie told us she had watched Adrian park behind the medical center.
He carried the briefcase inside.
Twenty minutes later, he came back out.
But he wasn’t alone.
An elderly woman was walking beside him.
She looked frail.
She was wearing a hospital cardigan and holding Adrian’s arm.
Sophie had followed them to a side entrance.
That’s where everything became confusing.
“I heard the woman call him by a different name,” Sophie whispered.
Mom frowned.
“What name?”
“Daniel.”
Mom’s face suddenly went completely pale.
“Daniel?”
I looked at her.
“Mom, what does that mean?”
She didn’t answer.
Instead, she reached for the notebook.
Her hands trembled as she opened it.
Every page contained dates.
Medical appointments.
Medication schedules.
Hospital room numbers.
And one name repeated over and over.
Eleanor Bennett.
Mom stared at it.
Then she looked at Adrian’s briefcase.
“This isn’t about another woman.”
Sophie shook her head.
“No.”
She opened one of the folders.
Inside was a photograph.
It showed Mom.
But the photograph wasn’t recent.
It had been taken almost thirty years earlier.
Mom covered her mouth.
“Oh no.”
I stared at her.
“Who is Daniel?”
Mom’s eyes filled with tears.
“Your father.”
My heart stopped.
Dad had died eleven years earlier.
“You mean Adrian knew Dad?”
Mom nodded slowly.
“They were brothers.”
I couldn’t speak.
Sophie stared at her grandmother.
“But Grandma… Adrian isn’t your boyfriend’s real name?”
Mom shook her head.
“No.”
She looked down at the photograph.
“His name is Daniel Vale.”
I felt dizzy.
“Then why has he been pretending to be Adrian?”
Mom didn’t know.
None of us did.
Until Sophie pulled another document from the briefcase.
It was a hospital discharge summary.
The patient’s name was Daniel Vale.
But underneath it was something that made my stomach drop.
Emergency contact: Eleanor Bennett.
Date of admission:
Eleven years ago.
Three days after Dad’s death.
Mom started crying.
“I don’t understand.”
Then Sophie whispered:
“There was one more thing.”
She reached into the bottom of the briefcase and pulled out a small envelope.
It had been sealed.
On the front were four words:
For Eleanor. When she remembers.
Mom stared at it.
“Where did you find this?”
“In the hidden compartment.”
She handed it to her.
Mom opened the envelope with shaking fingers.
Inside was a photograph of Dad standing beside Daniel.
On the back was a handwritten message.
“Eleanor, I didn’t abandon you. I disappeared because someone was trying to hurt our family.”
Mom stopped breathing.
I looked at her.
“Mom?”
She turned the photograph over again.
There was another sentence beneath the first.
“And the man you think died eleven years ago may not have been your husband.”
The room went completely silent.
Sophie began crying again.
Mom stared at the photograph as if the entire last eleven years had just been ripped apart.
Then she whispered something that made all three of us freeze.
“I knew something was wrong with your father’s funeral.”
I stepped closer.
“What are you saying?”
Mom looked at me.
“I never saw his face.”
The briefcase suddenly felt much heavier.
Because Adrian hadn’t been leaving dinner at 7:30 to meet another woman.
He had been spending every evening helping someone connected to a secret our family had buried for eleven years.
And now we knew why he had never invited Mom to his house.
Because there was something inside that house she had apparently been meant to see a long time ago.
Something connected to my father’s death.
The next morning, Mom and I drove to the address Adrian had always claimed was his home.
But when we arrived…
there was no Adrian.
There was no house.
Only an abandoned property.
And taped to the front door was a photograph of my father.
On the back, someone had written:
“If Eleanor has finally found this, tell her the truth before they find you.”
